QUAILS IN BULGARIA

Quails arrive in Bulgaria usually late April – early May when it starts their love period.

Quails could be found in all hunting areas of Bulgaria but the largest flocks of them could be seen at the Black Sea coast in September. When in summer the weather becomes very hot and dry, quails rise up to 2000 meters high.

Late August is the time when quails start regrouping and migrating to the south. The last flocks of them are seen in Bulgaria until October 20th. The late brooding quails remain in Bulgaria until the following spring.

WOODCOCKS IN BULGARIA

Mid-October following the last passage of quails could be seen the first woodcocks in Bulgaria. The arrival of cold weather in November makes woodcocks seek shelter in any suitable place in Bulgaria. The second half of November they concentrate on the Black Sea, seeking the mildest places that do not freeze during the winter.

Probably until late 80s Bulgarian hunters did not know or rather were not interested in this hunting option. Nowadays the Bulgarian hunters who attend woodcock hunting are still very few but some of them take pleasure of accompanying passionate foreign hunters.
